Cable 2: Your send from the Helix (you nominated 1/2 or 3/4 for the first line, so put the cable in 1 or 3) goes to the guitar input of your amp. Cable 3: From the effects loop send of your amp put that in to return 1 or 3 on the Helix. Cable 4: From the output (left/mono) of the Helix in to the effects loop return of your amp. There are 4 colored lines which signify each of the 4 cables needed to perform the 4 cable method with the Boss GT-100 similar to the Helix. Cable #1: (Red) Connects your guitar to the INPUT jack on the GT-100. Cable #2: (Blue) Connects the Amplifier Input to the SEND Jack found in the EXT LOOP on the GT-100.
4 Cable Method lets us place effects either before or after the amplifier’s EQ section, and its internal overdrive/distortion effect (a.k.a. the gain stage). Certain effects sound very different when placed before overdrive/distortion, or after. These differences are most obvious with time-based effects like reverb and delay.

Here’s a basic Four Cable Method hookup diagram, where the arrows point in the direction the audio is being sent: The four arrows in the above diagram refer to the “four cables” needed to make this whole thing work. Stick with me: 1. The guitar is connected to the INPUT jack of the effects unit. The 4 Cable Method works with the Boss GT-10, GT-8, GT-6, GT-5 & GT-3. Just like with the HD500X, with the 4 Cable Method you can easily switch between your amp’s preamp and the preamps on the GT. This gives you far more flexibility than relying completely on one or the other. Here is a diagram for the 4 Cable Method on the GT-10: Four cable method connections. Start by connecting your guitar, amplifier, and POD using the four guitar cables ( see diagram ): Cable 1: guitar to POD. Cable 2: POD fx send to amplifier guitar input. Cable 3: amplifier fx send to POD fx return. Cable 4: POD output to amplifier fx return.
4 cable method diagram. 4. Plug the ‘regular’ output of your multi-effects unit into the effect loop return of your amp. Almost every multi-effects unit with an effects loop feature also has the ability to move the loop around within your patches. This is where the power of Four Cable Method really becomes apparent. Wiring MC4 Equipped Solar Modules in Series. If you have two or more solar modules to wire in series, the MC4 connectors make it very simple. Take a look at the first module and you’ll notice that it has two wires extending from the junction box. One wire is the DC positive (+) and the other is the DC negative (-). The only reason to use the four cable method is to gate the pedals you have before the input, AND the pedals before the return of the effects loop. If you do end up wanting to gate both the front end of your amp, and the preamp (effects loop) then it may be better to just use two separate noise gates. From personal experience, the effects loop ...
